Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment removes infected tissue from inside your tooth. Our trained dentists will clean and fill the inside of your tooth to prevent further damage or infection. Root canal treatment can save your tooth from having to be taken out.

In the middle of each of your teeth is a mixture of blood vessels and nerves called pulp. Pulp sits inside a space called the pulp chamber. Connected to the pulp chamber and the pulp are one or more root canals. If your tooth is damaged, bacteria from your saliva can get inside it. This cause causes irritation, pain and swelling.

Root canal treatment is usually done under local anaesthesia. This completely blocks pain from your tooth and, jaw area and you will stay awake during the procedure. If you’re worried about having a local anaesthetic, feel free to talk to our dentist.

During root canal therapy, your dentist will clean the site and removes this dead or diseased tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth thoroughly, and then places a sealer material completely filling the inside the tooth and sealing it so that no living tissue or bacteria can get inside to prevent future infections in the nerve tissue or pulp. When this infected tissue or pulp is not treated, it breaks down and bacteria can cause an abscess, or infection of the mouth, face, jaw, or throat. However, with a simple root canal, you can prevent an abscess from developing.

If we determine you need root canal therapy, we use advanced technology to make treatment simple and efficient to restore your pain-free mouth.

Root Canal Symptoms

The roots of teeth contain blood vessels, nerve fibres and soft lymph tissues. These tissues can become damaged or infected due to various causes, but most commonly a deep cavity. Root canal therapy is often the option to relieve pain and avoid losing the tooth entirely. You may need a root canal if you experience one or more of the following root canal symptoms.

Common Symptoms of a Root Canal Infection

  • A strong, sustained throbbing pain in the area of the tooth
  • Pain when chewing on a particular tooth or a certain side of your mouth
  • Pain when consuming cold food or drinks
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Swollen and sensitive gums near the sore tooth
  • A pimple on the gums

In rare cases, no symptoms may be present even if you have a root canal infection, so it is advice about to see a dentist every six months and practice good oral hygiene habits.

Root canal therapy is usually a way to clear infections in a root canal. After cleaning outside the If left untreated, an infected root canal, and subsequent abscessed tooth, can cause one or more of the following:

  • Swelling that could spread to other areas of the face
  • Bone loss around the tip of the root
  • Drainage that can ooze into the gums and sometimes through the cheek into the skin

There are two main types of root canal procedures. Learn about them below.

Pulpectomy

Depending on how far the infection of your root canal extends, your Dental Associates dentist or endodontist may perform a partial root canal. This procedure, called a pulpectomy, will relieve pain and allow time for antibiotics to reduce the infection. Atan initial appointment, your endodontist will administer antibiotics to reduce the infection. At a second appointment, your endodontist will remove the infected pulp, and clean and fill the infected canal.

Apicoectomy

In certain cases, with excessive infection beyond the root tip, your dentist may recommend an apicoectomy in order to save the tooth. Your dentist will remove a portion of the root tip as well as the apical infection. Once your endodontist removes the infected tissue and cleans the entire area, the canal is filled with biocompatible material and Guetta Perche, which is a rubber-like material that seals your tooth from bacteria and reinfection.

Our team will ensure that your root canal therapy care extends beyond the procedure and will help manage any post-procedure pain you may have. To help with root canal recovery, you may be prescribed pain relievers or an antibiotic depending on the status of the remaining pulp and the amount of swelling.

Your tooth may be sensitive for the first few days following root canal therapy. This is natural, and will reside after a few days. In the meantime, it is to minimize chewing on the treated tooth until your root canal therapy is completely finished and the permanent filling or dental crown is in place.
